Panangipalli   Venugopal  has pioneered heart transplant surgery in India, having performed the first successful heart transplant in the country, the count now standing at 26 transplants.


Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962.


Joeseph E. Murray and his colleagues at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (1954)  in Boston performed the first truly successful kidney transplant from one twin to another. This was done without any immunosuppressive medication.
